An unseasonably mild winter has caused pollen counts to soar to new heights this spring, making misery for allergy sufferers.
Pollen counts last week hovered around 2,000 grains per cubic meter of air, nearly four times the level doctors consider severe. And although a chance of rain is expected through the middle of this week, as the weather warms up, the outlook for allergy sufferers only grows more bleak.
"This week has been an unmitigated disaster," Dr. Thomas Johnson of New England Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in North Andover said Friday. "If we continue to see sunny weather, it'll be time to batten down the hatches."
