IRVING, Texas _ Earlier in the week, Shigeki Maruyama said he would give himself "little chance" in a head-to-head matchup against one of the world's top players.
He avoided that scenario by handily beating a world-class field at the Verizon Byron Nelson Classic.
Although Tiger Woods made his usual final-round Nelson run with a 65 and unheralded Ben Crane fired a 65 in front of him, Maruyama never lost control Sunday.
He shot a 2-under-par 68 at the TPC Four Seasons at Las Colinas to finish at 14-under 266, two ahead of Crane. Woods finished third for the second straight year, four strokes back, followed by David Toms and Ernie Els at 8 under.
