IRVING, Texas _ Sunday's final round of the Verizon Byron Nelson Classic had all the suspense of a modern political convention. Before CBS' telecast came on the air, we already knew the name of the winner.

Not that the broadcasters didn't try to bring some tension onto the scene. If they weren't convinced that Shigeki Maruyama was going to blow a four-shot lead over some stranger named Ben Crane, they at least tried repeatedly to convince their audience a Maruyama meltdown was imminent.

Ken Venturi seemed to discredit every approach shot Maruyama hit early on the back nine, sounding off about huge mental mistakes. It was as if the CBS crew couldn't wait ...
