SPRING not only encourages outdoor gardening activity but also focuses attention on houseplants that are under-achieving.
The most spectacular indoor blossoms are produced by hippeastrum - also, though wrongly, called amaryllis - and is disappointing when an expensive bulb fails to flower well.
Houseplants are also put under extreme pressure when a combination of central heating and sunlight makes their environment intensely hot and dry. And, of course, identifying plants brought back from abroad is a constant challenge.
