On 18 April 2002, BGS Beta-Gamma-Service's industrial irradiation facility in Bruchsal, Germany, goes into service. Products up to 12 m in length and 0.80 m in height with a maximum weight of 1 ton can be irradiated, as well as entire pallets of products packed ready for dispatch. BGS has been in the industrial irradiation business for 20 years, employing gamma and electron beam (E-beam) technology. The new facility also features the use of X-rays. "The penetration depth of X-rays is significantly higher than that of normal E-beams, which makes irradiation of complete pallets possible," says Dr. Alfred Zyball, Managing Director of BGS.
