AP--South African Breweries Ltd., brewer of Pilsner Urquell beer and a strong player in emerging markets, continues to engage in "preliminary" talks with Philip Morris. Discussions are preliminary, and no deal has been reached.
The deal would give Miller a parent company that is more focused on beer than the tobacco-food giant Philip Morris, said Benj Steinman, publisher and editor of industry trade publication Beer Marketer's Insights.
It also could help Milwaukee-based Miller maintain its market share against top-brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. and other competitors, said Mark Rodman, who owns Beverage Distribution Consultants of Swampscott, Mass.
