Wegmans Food Markets will this week begin selling packaged fresh ground beef that has been irradiated to kill harmful bacteria.
Irradiation is a relatively new, government-approved method in the processing of meat products. It is used to kill bacteria, including E. coli, that are dangerous to humans.
Unlike other ground beef, irradiated ground beef can be cooked to less than well done and eaten safely.
"Several years ago, we announced that the only safe way to serve ground beef was to cook it to 160 degrees to eliminate any possible E. coli," said Jeanne Colleluori, a Wegmans spokeswoman.
