Here's an update of the old saw about locking the barn door after the horse has gone: If you build a "barn" in the middle of what is supposed to be an attractive new "gateway" district in Syracuse, you may open the door and find the "horse" carrying your hopes has already fled.
That's what some folks are calling the new Family Dollar discount store due to open Thursday in the 900 block of South Salina Street: a barn. The building encloses 8,000 square feet in a metal-sided building. Its front faces a parking lot that opens to the middle of the block. Its windowless side and back face Salina Street and neighboring Burt Street.
