As details of the U.S. farm bill now before Congress were revealed last week, the Canadian government came under increased pressure to take quick action to counter the effects of the new American measure on Canada's agriculture sector.
Pointing to government studies showing that Canada's grain farmers lost 25% of their income between 1995 and 2000 because of farm subsidies paid by foreign governments, farm groups want a quick infusion of $1.3 billion (Canadian). per year in new subsidies.
