QUESTION Burnley FC fans claim theirs is the best-supported football club in Britain per head of population. Are they correct?
ALTHOUGH this year's Third Division newcomers and playoff finalists Rushden & Diamonds run them a close second, Burnley's 90,000 population and average gate of 15,500 still leaves them top of this league.
Assuming most Burnley supporters come from Burnley, about 17per cent of the population turns out to support them on match days.
Formed in 1991/1992 by the merger of Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds, Rushden & Diamonds have the smallest catchment area for support.
