May 14--Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that burned for several hours Monday in a section of the Shell Chemical plant in Deer Park.
The blaze in the olefins-3 unit at the plant, at 5900 Texas 225 near Beltway 8, produced thick, black smoke and forced "shelter in place" warnings for nearby residents and schools. No injuries were reported, however.
The extent of the damage had not been determined late Monday, but Shell spokesman Dave McKinney said the fire did not affect the refinery portion of the plant.
