THE MEMORY IS STILL fresh in Miguel Harth-Bedoya's mind. He pictures himself standing in his Eugene hotel room, packing his clothes for a return flight to New York City. It was May 1996, and he had just concluded his job interview with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra.
Suddenly, the phone rang. On the line was longtime orchestra board member Mike Fox.
"He said, `You ready for a boat ride?' ' Harth-Bedoya recalls. "I said, `But I have to go to the airport.' He said, `I know. We'll go on the way to the airport.' '
