Nearly everyone is most comfortable walking at about 3 miles per hour, midway between a shuffle and a speed-walk. Many scientists believe that's because our bodies are most energy efficient at this speed. But Wayne Willis and colleagues at Arizona State University think we prefer this pace because it depletes only fat, the body's richest store of energy, and not carbohydrate.
