The night before he died in his near west side home, retired physics teacher Paul DeRose called his daughter to his room and explained to her the thermostat.
"Every little thing, if I asked how it worked, he would give me a beautiful, clear description of it. Anything from how a heat pump works to a radio, radio waves, all sorts of stuff," said his daughter, Victoria DeRose, a chemistry professor at Texas A&M University.
"The night before he died, he gave me a last very clear lesson. It was very simple, how to keep and adjust the thermostat, but he was teaching to the very end," she said.
