When Scott Nelson finally stepped into a batter's box this season, nobody knew what to expect from the North Eugene slugger.
Six weeks after suffering a broken pinkie in a pregame collision with a teammate, and five weeks after surgery, the senior was cleared to hit his first ball of the season.
"I thought it might take him awhile as far as how well he would swing the bat," North Eugene coach Corey Nicholsen said. "I remember when I was playing and I took a month off, my timing was messed up. But Scott hit a bucket of balls off the tee, then took batting practice, and it looked like he hadn't missed a day."
