NEW YORK -- In two moves aimed at streamlining product development, Rockport Co. said last week it would close its New York-based design operation and also named John Deem to the post of vice president, global product development.
The actions effectively centralize the company's design team at parent Reebok International Ltd.'s headquarters in Canton, Mass. While the pullback from New York is likely to result in real estate savings and the elimination of some jobs, Rockport President Rick Paterno told Footwear News the aim is not to cut costs, but rather to better coordinate Rockport's product design and development function.
