So furniture designer Edward Wormley assessed her career after the flamboyant decorator died at 81 in 1968, that turbulent year when a new generation of rule-breakers rediscover her brand of hautebohemian glamour. Although Cumming's signature aubergine-glazed walls became a commonplace of late sixties and seventies interiors, her seemingly freewheeling yet highly disciplined style remains inimitable. As one of the true originals of 20th-century design, she had no precise antecedents and no direct followers, but her influence can still be felt wherever uprightness is flouted and dullness is despised.
