No species survives forever. So if, in the course of evolution, an intelligent new species succeeding our own were to write our epitaph, it might go something like this:
Homo sapiens were highly intelligent creatures. They gave us engineering marvels and introduced us into space. But they were a cranky bunch, and very fixed in their ways. They were too social to live alone, too stubborn to live peacefully together, and too crotchety to settle conflicts without violence.
Their ways served them well for thousands of years while they lived in small groups in the jungle. But they couldn't adapt to the crowded conditions they created in cities and nations. ...
