On the surface, this may seem like another of our "special" theme issues, such as the winter number, "Stories and Journeys" or our annual "All-Fiction" issue. Alas, I cannot take credit for thinking about good and evil in advance for this number, since it just grew over time with the individual pieces taken on their merits without any preconceived theme in mind. Yet when one takes these essays as a whole there seemed to be angels and devils lurking in the carpet (a la Henry James) because, as Levi-Straus noted, things are either hot or cold, or cooked or raw, or...
