The decision of the late King Hussein in his final days to appoint his son Abdullah heir to the throne of Jordan surprised the international community. It had been widely expected that Hussein's brother, Crown Prince Hassan, would succeed him. Throughout his reign King Hussein was highly respected for his diplomatic skills and for his role as a regional peacemaker, it would take a person of considerable stature to fill the void he left.
