DALLAS--After leading Dean Foods Co. for more than 30 years, and ushering it through an industry changing merger, Howard M. Dean retired last month, two months earlier than planned.
A press release dated April 12, announced Dean's immediate retirement, without elaborating on its suddenness. Since the merger with Suiza Foods was completed at the end of 2001, the company had indicated that CEO Gregg Engles would not succeed Howard Dean as chairman until June.
