Paintball, a game in which opposing players shoot thin-skinned balls of colored paint at each other, is generally safe, but players need goggles to protect their eyes. Addicks Engineering, an injection molder in Bell Gardens, Calif., molds polycarbonate lenses that are used in paintball masks. The masks, which are sold by JT USA of Chula Vista, Calif., needed a better hardcoating system for the lenses.
According to Lyle Addicks of Addicks Engineering, paint often stained the lenses, and some coatings on the market tended to make the plastic lenses brittle.
