Aside from an occasional business meeting, Minnesota-born F.W. Newell hadn't spent much time in his home state for the past 60 years or so. But when he and his wife, Fran, decided it was time to donate some of the possessions cluttering their Tennessee home, he called the Minnesota Historical Society to see if it might be interested in a painting with local connections.
Art curator Brian Szott, who has overseen the society's 6,000-piece art collection for the past year, was cautious.
