MY daughter is 21 in a few days and will be celebrating away from home, in Plymouth. Last week I heard that Plymouth city centre was the scene of a fight between police and 100 drunks, which left an injury toll that could have been the result of a small war.

A few streets from where she shares a house with other students, a man was found dead in suspicious circumstances. She earns pin money working behind the bars of local pubs. I worry about her.

This in a city from where the British sailed off to beat the Spanish Armada in one of the great sea battles of our history.
