It happened first in the salty snack category. In 1994, salty snack manufacturers introduced Large Single Serve (LSS). Entire machines were reconfigured to fit the larger bags of chips.
While not universally embraced by operators, LSS gained placements through the Nineties. By 2000, according to the Automatic Merchandiser State of the Vending Industry Report, they represented one-tenth of all bag chip sales. More importantly, LSS snacks averaged a 70-cent price point compared to 48 cents for regular-size snacks.
