SACRAMENTO - He was the king of Kings, though the realm wasn't much in those days.
Sacramento was the NBA's deepest outpost. The Gulag of the league. Such a perennial loser, in Mitch Richmond's seven years here, not once did he know a winning season.
The Kings were the only show in town and Richmond their lone star. There was no major-league baseball, no NHL, no NFL, no major college program.
Just the Kings, suffering through a miserable decade, Richmond the city's one true athletic hero. Their one real star. He was big then. Bigger than Sacramento, it turned out.
