A few six-packs of petunias and zinnias at 50 cents per seedling can make a garden. But many homeowners have far grander ambitions (and far steeper plant bills). "Some people want what no one else in their neighborhood has," says Nancy Buley of the family-owned tree nursery J. Frank Schmidt & Son in Boring, Ore. "And the price doesn't bother them."
Last year, a lull in all sales, especially after September 11, was "a bit scary," she recalls. Then suddenly, demand "grew very, very strong. I think people are turning inward and toward their homes. There has been a groundswell of people who want more trees, cost what they may."
