Cirrus Design was first out of the blocks with a new FAA-certificated small plane in the new general aviation era. Cirrus Design was a partner in NASA's AGATE technology program (industry, university and government consortium). Cirrus depended on AGATE primarily for certification of the composites used in the SR02 and SR22.
While Lancair has continued to built kitplanes, Cirrus stopped making homebuilt kits when they decided to pursue certification of the SR20 and SR22.
Cirrus Design received FAA certification in October, 1990 and shipped their first aircraft that month. Since, they have shipped 400 aircraft out of their Duluth, Minnesota molding and assembly plant. ...
