Expected Robben Island to be a sad place. During the 10-kilometer speedboat crossing from Cape Town, I wondered how I would survive almost three weeks in this bleakest of South African retreats. The occasion--a series of lectures on how to combat human-rights abuses-- wasn't exactly sunny, either. As we approached, rocky Robben Island looked as grim as its history: first a hospital for leprosy patients; then a military training ground during World War II.
