May 23--A record-breaking 485,880 visitors toured Denver Botanic Gardens in 2001 and membership blossomed to a new high of 18,754, according to the nonprofit's annual report.
Damian Stone, right, brought Florida visitor Gilda del Cid to the Denver Botanic Gardens on Wednesday. Executive director Brinsley Burbidge said the gardens is doing well because of post-Sept. 11 donations and a lot of visitors -- a record 485,880 last year. But for the second year in a row the Botanic Gardens lost more than $1 million, posting a loss of $1.4 million in 2001 after a $1.5 million loss in 2000.
