This much we know. There is no doubt that an English colonial named William Crawford was the founder of Portsmouth in February, 1752. This much we don't really know - just how he spelled his last name!
Some records have it as "Craford", while other have it as "Crafford", and of course, there is the more popular "Crawford." Perhaps to put the matter to rest or stir the pot a little more, his name is spelled "Craford" on two of the most important documents in his life, his will and his map for developing Portsmouth!
