DUCK -- In a spirited effort to comfort a dying beached whale, about 25 volunteers formed a bucket brigade to keep its back wet on Wednesday.
Still, the animal had to be euthanized around 11:30, saddening those who helped and those who had just walked up to the scene.
The 18-foot-long false killer whale was found at the high tide line at dawn by a Network for Endangered Sea Turtles volunteer, who was on a morning patrol.
Beachcombers and morning strollers assisted in the rescue mission at the request of the Duck Fire Department.
