EVER since I was born, months after the destruction of Hiroshima in 1945, I've lived in the shadow of the Bomb. We all have.
And once Russia acquired the Bomb in 1949, we lived in the shadow of nuclear war.
This was the one ghastly blight on an otherwise wonderful period of peace and prosperity, for most British people far and away the best time in their history.
So there was intense relief when Soviet Russia collapsed in 1989 and the Cold War was no more.
What we all failed to notice until now was ...
