Well, Sun's introduction of its latest operating system, Solaris 9, on Wednesday has left a lot of people scratching their heads and wondering what Sun is up to - or at least thinks it's up to - and how the heck it's going to monetize it.
The idea behind the event was apparently to set off a bunch of firecrackers and get folks to thinking of Sun, the stoutly irrepressible box shifter, as a software company.
Scott McNealy's long-standing crack about software being just a feature of the hardware still hung heavy in the air, when Sun's departing president and COO Ed Zander - making what is doubtless his final public appearance for Sun before he fades off ...
