COLUMBIA, S.C. _ Mack C. Branham Jr. reached his 71st birthday last month with some sweat and strain _ but his health was not the problem.
He was hoisting about twice his weight off the floor in a powerlifting contest.
"It's fun," the 6-foot-1-inch, 218-pound Chapin resident said of powerlifting competition.
That Branham enjoys powerlifting as well as competing in the track-and-field events of javelin, discus and shot put would come as no surprise to anyone who knows him. He has claimed shelves full of trophies for the former and numerous gold, silver and bronze medals for the latter.
