CERIGNOLA, Italy -- My father and I tramped through the weeds to the low stone building that once housed the air base's briefing room. Grass and weeds grew atop the arched roof. The large entrance had no door. The dirt floor sloped down to the darkened back, where we could just make out "Do Not Stand On Chairs" painted on the wall.
Those instructions were no longer necessary. The chairs were removed long ago. From the smell, the building had been a barn more recently than a military base. The single, dank room holds little more than memories now.
