Reading this new book by James Stayer, well-known historian of Anabaptism, my first thought was: "Is Saul also among the prophets?" (1.Sam. 10:11). This self-proclaimed "profane historian with a liberal perspective" (Anabaptists and the Sword, 1976), is here dealing with Lutheran theological issues, thus in effect writing as a theologian himself. I hasten to add, however, that Stayer is most effective at it.
