Twenty years ago plantation workers in Sri Lanka had never heard about fair trade, let alone about fair trade tea. Today, thanks to an increasing market share in Europe and to a growing one in Japan, Canada and the U.S., many farmers and manual laborers have been able to improve their immediate living conditions through the fair trade principles. The concept is gaining momentum, with consumer awareness campaigns such as Fair Trade Week in the U.K. in March, television commercials in northern Europe and an increasing presence at EU lobbying corridors. Nobody would have guessed that consumers could make an informed choice about tea that was produced thousands of miles away.
