After his firing as the University of Wisconsin men's basketball coach 14 months ago, Brad Soderberg received a telephone call from a well-known colleague.
"A coach whose name you would recognize," said Soderberg, who declined to identify the caller. "He said, Well, now you're a coach. You're not a coach until you've been fired from a job.' "
It took 17 years of coaching for Soderberg, the son of a high school basketball coach, to be indoctrinated. It happened on March 20, 2001, a Monday morning, when UW athletic director Pat Richter broke the news that he was going in a different direction.
