The Italian government may sell down stakes in Enel, the utility, Telecom Italia and Ente Tabbacchi Italiani, a cigarette maker. Domenico Siniscalco, director general of the Economy Ministry, was in charge of a committee overseeing state sales that will present its proposals to the government, according to Il Sole/24 Ore, a local newspaper. Merrill Lynch and Mediobanca led Enel's initial public offering in November 1999. The Italian government still owns 67% of Enel, which has a market capitalisation of [euro]39.3bn ($36.4bn).
