May 28--HARTFORD, Ark.--Coal formations such as the one under this west Arkansas mining town once lured miners with picks and shovels. Now they are drawing wildcatters with drills that can bore into coal and bring up natural gas.
Gas locked inside coal beds is providing a profitable frontier for drilling companies, and they are beginning to move into the Arkansas coal fields. A Dallas firm began production this spring near Hartford, and other exploration companies are circling, said Scott Bruner, deputy director of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission.
