I purchased some edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) seeds this year. The package reads, ``Sow May to July in sandy soil. Moisten with care. . . .'' I know there are not any Alps around here. Where should I plant it? Sun, shade, soil, in-ground or a container? Will it grow here? - Beverly A. Fife, Virginia Beach.
You'll have trouble keeping any kind of alpine plants alive in Virginia Beach. Curator Mike Andruczyk at the Norfolk Botanical Garden says to plant edelweiss in sandy soil with good drainage and where it will have afternoon shade. They're used to growing in rocks, and I would start the seed outdoors rather than trying to start them indoors in the ...
