QUESTION Is Stephen Byers related to Frank Byers, who stood as a Liberal candidate for North Dorset in the Forties and Fifties?
THIS mistaken connection stems from an error in the Oxford Companion To 20th Century British Politics, which records Frank as 'father of Stephen Byers, member of Tony Blair's cabinet' (as he then was).
Stephen Byers's father is, in fact, a former RAF radar technician, Robert Byers.
Charles Frank Byers (1915-1984) had an illustrious service career.
After a stint in the Royal Artillery, he served on Field Marshal Montgomery's staff with the Eighth Army in North Africa and was three times mentioned in dispatches, ...
