SKYSCRAPERS and women in Jackie-O style suits sauntering down the streets of sixties Washington DC sets the scene for the Welsh National Opera's new production of Rigoletto.

Usually placed in 16th century Mantua, the company is hoping to win new audiences with its radically reformed version of Verdi's gripping opera.

It represents the start of a dynamic new phase in WNO's development which has just been funded by a pounds 4.25m grant.

``We don't update an opera for the sake of change,'' says Estelle Hitchon, a spokeswoman for the company.
