College student body elections once consisted mostly of aspirants for office posting fliers around campus and knocking on dormitory room doors.
But races to become campus leaders are taking on an increasingly professional flavor, including get-out-the-vote activities, coalition building and heavy advertising. And campus campaigns have in certain cases become big business, with some campaigns at large state universities costing up to $20,000, according to W. H. "Butch" Oxendine Jr., publisher of Student Leader, a publication tailored for college and university campus elected officials.
