BUENOS AIRES, Argentina _ Government officials in Argentina hope that by meeting the International Monetary Fund's remaining demands this week, the bankrupt country may turn the corner on its worst-ever economic crisis.
The Argentine Senate on Thursday night repealed a 1970s-era economic measure that the IMF stridently opposed, clearing one of the last major obstacles for Argentina to receive new aid. With provincial governors also coming on board with spending cuts, the struggling government of President Eduardo Duhalde has reason for cautious optimism.
