Cardigan: A Life Of Lord Cardigan Of Balaclava by Donald Thomas Cassell [pound]20 [pound]16 (0870 165 0870) The name Cardigan of Balaclava might sound slightly absurd today, like something out of a knitwear catalogue, but up to 1854 James Brudenell, Seventh Earl of Cardigan, was considered even more ridiculous: a pompous, arrogant, loudmouthed bully and boor. But then on October 25, 1854, his one redeeming feature - his great physical bravery - came to the fore. On that day he led the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War, thereby justifying his otherwise ludicrous life both to his contemporaries and to posterity.
