With the October, 2002 "pull-ahead" on-highway truck emission regulations only months away, Caterpillar said its heavy-duty and midrange diesel engines, in the most popular ratings, will be available in October 2002.

In 1998, five heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers (Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Volvo and Mack) agreed -- as part of a consent decree -- to meet the scheduled January 2004 emissions standards in October 2002. The agreement to pull the standards ahead was in response to the Environmental Protection Agency's claim that manufacturers had been using "defeat devices" to get around emission rules.
