CONSTRUCTION has started on the 52.7km base tunnel beneath the Alps which will enable high-speed passenger rail services to operate directly between Lyon, France, and Turin, Italy. The twin-bore link from St Jean de Maurienne to Bussoleno, comprising separate rail and road tunnels, is due to be completed in 2012.
Work on the Euros 13 billion project has begun earlier than originally planned following the closure of the Mont Blanc road tunnel three years ago as a result of a deadly fire caused by a crash.
