Vietnam's southern city of Ho Chi Minh City is growing rapidly. A metro is regarded as essential to form the backbone of the city's public transport network to help solve steadily increasing traffic congestion.
ALTHOUGH Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is Vietnam's second city, it is already the country's largest in terms of population, and the most important economically. The population of Ho Chi Minh City is expected to grow from just over 5 million today to about 6.5 million in 2010 and 8.5 million by 2020.
